The Originals Syrah
2024
Bright, perfumed & fresh with fine fruit-derived savoury tannin & minerality. Contemporary Syrah to reflect Mt Benson's terroir.
Description
Planted in 1999, the Syrah is one of the original plantings at Wangolina. 2024 was a steady growing season in Mt Benson, with a late burst of warmth to flesh out the fruit. Handpicked and 50% de-stemmed, undertaking spontaneous fermentation with gentle punch-downs. It was gently pressed into conditioned oak to rest for 11 months before bottling.
2024 Originals Syrah is youthful & vibrant of fresh summer mulberries, lavender & violet florals underpinned by a fine thread of white pepper. The palate expresses a style that is bright, textural and primary of summer berry coulis. Some lifting natural acidity on the finish lingers with fine, peppery, fruit-derived tannins and even a note of chalky limestone and coastal minerality. It’s a wine we feel portrays our unique climate incredibly well.
92 points – Lisa Cardelli – "Plenty of vinous youth still radiates from this wine, with a fresh, fragrant character of just-squeezed grapes defining the initial aromas. The nose is a basket of freshly harvested blueberries, blood plums, blackcurrants, and violet petals, while red liquorice and rhubarb add extra aromatic depth. Medium-bodied, with supple tannins and lively acidity, it highlights the coolness inherent to the coastal nature of the Mount Benson region. Drink now–2030"
91 points – Shanteh Wale – Halliday Wine Companion – "Made with 50% whole-bunch ferment and matured in a mix of seasoned oak. Lilac and rosella flowers, blackberries and dark plums. Some pepperberries and soft juniper spice. A concentrated wine with some black pepper and cumin spice. Tannins are powdery but with good staying power. The more you keep sipping, the more this wine gives. Enjoyable now but has the ability for ageing, say another three to five years."
