The Originals Semillon

The Originals Semillon

2023

Our winemaker's favourite grape. Zingy, textural Semillon made with love.

$35.00

    Description

Planted in 1999 the Semillon is one of the original plantings at Wangolina. The 2023 vintage was a particularly cooler & later vintage than usual for Mt Benson. With threats of rain a constant tease with showers & drizzle, it held off to product white wines of exceptional layer & complexity, whilst retaining plenty of natural acid.

The Originals Semillon was handpicked and whole bunch pressed before being divided evenly into two portions. One fermented with wild yeast in older French oak, and the remainder in a ceramic egg for approx four months. Both batches rested on fine lees to add texture to the mouthfeel . The Semillon was then blended back together, clarified and then bottled while still youthful.

From nose to palate, your senses will indulge in a generous burst of ripe lemon, custard apple and hints of dry straw. The palate of flavours provides a nice flow, as it glides across the buds, held firm by a fine thread of acidity and spicy phenols. The wine style is linear with driving acidity and an exceltionally long citrusy finish. Think somewhere between ripe, juicy Riesling & lean chardonnay.

Typically perfect with fresh oysters, whiting or pan fried snapper. Or live on the edge, & trust us that it’s our favourite wine to pair with almost every cut & seasoning of steak.

94 points – Tom Kline – "Sweet and savoury pops of honeysuckle, hay, subtle buttered toast, preserved lemon and apple strudle rise from the glass. Very inviting. The palate has good weight and texture. Lemon wax, lemon zest, and apple with cedar and toast in the background. Lovely phenolic edge and pithy acid through a long finish. Loads of interest, balance and complexity here. Delicious."
