Project 5255 Malbec

Project 5255 is a ground-breaking winemaking experiment that offers winemakers two tonnes of fruit from Langhorne Creek to make a small-batch wine.
Description
The 2024 Project 5255 Malbec grapes were selectively harvested on the 6th of March from Kimbolton Vineyards ‘Lake Plains Road Vineyard’, clones MAT3 and MAT4. After crushing fermentation was encouraged by inoculation with a saccharomyces uvarum strain, which increases savoury and spicy characters. Hand plunged for gentle extraction to preserve vibrancy, then matured in 10% new French oak,1 puncheon and 8 barriques for 10 months prior to bottling.
Plenty of violet aromas preluding the sensation of standing under a ripe Mulberry tree in late summer. The palate brings luscious sweet berry fruit, raspberry and crunchy plum highlights carried by autumnal spice and buckets of texture. Trademark Langhorne Creek tannins that are so fine and dusty, but carry long enough to force you to stop and reconsider this wine as a ‘contemplate’ instead of a ‘guzzle’.

Malbec forms part of winemaker Anita Goode’s family history, a shared love, to abbreviate the longer story. Ipso, with this project to recognise Langhorne Creek, malbec was in the crosshairs. It’s got good slosh and softness, a little scree of herbal detail, some ferrous earthiness, touches of mint and saltbush, all of this amongst a ripe, cuddly sluice of squished, ripe, black plum juice. It rolls around the palate well, gently stains it with sweet, woody spices, finishes cool and herbal. A good delivery of the variety here, a touch of restraint too. So very pleasing."
92 points – Shanteh Wale – Halliday Wine Companon – "Fruit is from the Kimbolton vineyard. Intense crimson with a fluorescent pink rim; this is malbec and this is Langhorne Creek, that’s for sure. Mulberry, boysenberry and lavender leaf. A coil of salted licorice, potting soil and granitic soils. Some sage leaf and plum pit with chewy tannins. This is pulsing with life."
