A Series Mencia
2023
Spain's answer to Pinot Noir? A fresh & savoury variety made for long-lunching on a sunny afternoon.
Description
Mencia is an alternative variety that originates from the Bierzo region in north-western Spain, and is extremely rare within Australia. We are fortunate to work with this variety thanks to some plantings in the Mundulla region of the Limestone Coast, South Australia.
Made in a ‘Vino Joven’ style, by way of hand plunging and shorter maturation time in conditioned oak to retain purity. We wish to exemplify the fresh, aromatic angle that makes this variety such a wonderful lunching red for a sunny afternoon.
Aromas of this wine are pure and focused of medicinal cherry & red liqourice strap. A bright, textured impression is made as it graces the palate of exotic goji berry, red cherry & cherry pip. Soft dusty black tea tannins keep the edges savoury with a gentle linger of earthy kola-nut.
Wonderful with a short chill before serving.
95 points – Shanteh Wale – Halliday Wine Companion – "A wine evocative of damp forest floor, with organic soil, fungi and granitic earth. Bramble and Bing cherries; some bracken and thorny shrubs, too. A plume of potpourri florals. Its lingering acidity is key to lengthening those flavours. The fruit, the spice and the inorganic minerals make this wine detailed and captivating. Close in style to mountainous Galician mencías, but with its own distinct richness and vitality. It’s one heck of a drink."
93 points – Lisa Cardelli – "From the get-go, the nose is captured by an intriguing alternation of pomegranate and blackberry, crushed gravel, and black liquorice. The structure of this wine is truly polarising. I like the cherry-pit bitterness of the tannins, grippy yet levigated, which leaves a noticeable mark across the palate and adds depth to the sweet and savoury flavours. A great expression beyond its spiritual home in Spain. Drink now–2028"
