A Series Aglianico
2024
Gorgeous Aglianico. Perfumed, savoury, structured & complex. Campania meets Mundulla in style.
Description
Known by some as ‘Barolo of the South’. Native to the southern Italian region of Campania, our Aglianico (al-YAHN-i-ko), is grown in the temperate climate of Mundulla here in the Limestone Coast, this late-ripening red grape variety is a play-time treat for us. A wine of perfume, bright acidity & powerful savoury tannins.
Gently handled in winery with hand plunging on skins followed by 15 months in conditioned hogsheads before bottling.
Varietal from the first pour with a transparent red hue & bronzed around the rim. Aromas ooze of oily red rose petals, red currants & leafy raspberries with brooding savoury notes of anise, fennel bulb & fresh leather that become more promenant with air. The palate begins gently with lifted red fruits before those trademark Aglianico tannins that are long, grainy & ferrous arrive, ensuring you keep chewing your glands & going back for more.
Gold Medal – 2025 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show
92 points – Lisa Cardelli – "Intense and impenetrable on the nose despite a relatively mild ruby-red colour, the wine offers plenty of black olive tapenade, prunes, black liquorice, cracked black pepper, and ground coffee beans. The palate is framed by ample, chunky tannins, with an incisive, savoury note of smoked meat accompanying the fruit profile, leading to a restrained finish. Drink now–2030"
92 points – Shanteh Wale – Halliday Wine Companion – "Anita Goode’s curiosity and creativity are evident. She takes chances, takes risks, and experiments. Here she has planted aglianico, not knowing whether it will ripen year on year. But as coastal influence shows, sometimes conditions will be just right. Dried rose petals, smoked Ancho chillies and rosehip, a touch of blackberry, too. A grainy tannin frame is propped up by a slew of juicy acidity. It’s grungy and edgy, it’s fun and playful. It hits textural notes that only the Italian and Greek varieties can do. I hope to see more in the future."
