A Northern Italian variety native to the Trentino Alto-Adige region. We source this alternative variety from our good friends at Wirrega vineyards near Bordertown in the Limestone Coast. This region is further inland and north than our own vineyards, and it produces fruit with a rich flavour profile and full bodied palate.

We had an above average warm summer with favourable dry conditions which kept disease pressure to a minimum and allowed for steady ripening and an early harvest. Conditions during harvest were excellent with steady warm weather leading to easy ripening and excellent quality. The additional heat during the growing season is responsible for the depth of fruit flavours, complexity and structure of the tannins in this wine.

The winemaking brief was to respect and enhance the natural characteristics of this variety, so we kept it simple. Fermentation on skins for 10 days was followed with maturation in a combination of new and old, predominately French oak for the final blend.

Try me with confit duck with roasted beetroot, fennel and a sticky plum glaze.

Tasting Notes
Deep, dense colour. Lagrein, from northern Italy's Trentino Adige region, is a fearsomely full-bodied variety, taking no prisoners. The task for Anita Goode was to avoid extraction, so fermentation of crushed and destemmed fruit was a simple 10 days with no plunging, followed by maturation in new and old, predominantly French, oak. It must be said the depth comes from the fruit, not tannins. James Halliday, August 2020
