Tempranillo is a variety native to Spain, it is a “newer” addition to the Australian wine scene.
We source this alternative variety from our good friends at Wirrega vineyards near Bordertown in the Limestone Coast. This region is further inland and further north than our own vineyards so that it produces fruit with of a different nature to our own, with a rich fruit profile and a full bodied palate.
2016 was a steady and warm growing season this additional heat during the growing season is responsible for the depth and structure of the tannins in this wine. The grapes are crushed and then cold macerated for 48 hours to give the fleshy fruit character prior to an additional 12 days on skin during fermentation. With the tannin profile some much more vigorous in the 2016 than in previous vintages we decided to only use older oak for maturation to assist in softening and integrating the tannin.
