Hot off the Press...

November 2009

It has once agin been a very busy month! It is amazing how quickly the year goes! The end of October saw the Limestone Coast Wine Show come and go. We were quite sucessful at the Limestone Coast Wine Show winning more medals than we ever have. The Limestone Coast Wine Show is a tough show as the calibre of the red wines is always very high and the competition is great. This year for the very first time we won a Bronze medal for our Sauvignon Blanc, even the 2008 Savvy did not win a medal at this show. The 2007 Cabernet Shiraz picked up a Silver and was top of it's class again, having won the top of class Silver last year also. This year we were also thrilled to win a Bronze medal for our 2008 Section 67 Cabernet Sauvignon, which in a large class full of top class Coonawarra Cabernets is a great result. Anita was on the wine show committee this year and so following the show, after a very busy week took off for a weeks worth of holiday in Fiji, which was some well deserved downtime. November has been an interesting month weather wise. With the heat persisting most of the way through to the end of the month flowering in the vineyard happened very quickly, which was interesting. The yeilds this year look like they could be down slightly with lower numbers of bunches produced. The heat culminated with a massive lightning storm which resulted in many fires around the local area which were easily bought under control. We are looking forward to some more normal weather in the next few weeks.

We are also pleased to announce that the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz was awarded a Bronze medal at the Great Australian Red Competition run by renown wine writers Matthew Jukes and Tyson Stelzer.

October 2009

We have been very busy here at Wangolina in the past few months and we are anticipating the release of a new range of wines.... Wangolina Station Section 67. The new range is named after the section number of the Mount Benson hundred in which our vineyard lies. These individual vineyard wines are a premium selection of the wines produced by Wangolina Station and represent the amazing terrior that we have here in Mount Benson. The 2008 Section 67 Cabernet Sauvignon will be the first wine released in this premium range and will not be available until early this month. We are thrilled to be able to offer wines of this quality and feel it is a great leap forward for us to produce such high calibre wines.

September 2009

Wangolina Station was rated four stars in the 2010 edition of the very popular Australian Wine Companion by James Halliday.  James rated our wines very highly and so we saw an increase in our overall rating. Most of our wines were rated 90 points and over which is a really great acheivement. The ratings were as follows

2008 Semillon- 93 points

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon- 90 points

2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz - 90 points

2008 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc- 90 points

2007 Shiraz - 87 points

Vintage 2009

The 2009 vintage is now finished and things are looking good for the 2009 wines. Early season weather conditions were favourable with a good rain in December setting the vines up for the summer. In February we were hit by a heat wave, the temperature soared to above 40˚C, which is really hot when you live in Mount Benson, thankfully we were not in any other part of the state! While it was hot here it was hotter inland! The vines pushed through the heat really well with only minor losses of internal leaves. The heat wave was a great discussion point around the wine industry with vineyards in more northern regions being very severely affected. Once again we will never complain too much about our “gentle sea breezes”
Vintage proper commenced on March 14th with the harvesting of our young block of Sauvignon Blanc. This hit the winery looking amazing it had great tropical fruit flavours as juice and so it was pressed, racked and yeasted. This was soon followed up by the old block Sauvignon Blanc which also looked really great showing its typical herbal grassy aromas. Mid-ferment this batch looked fabulous, with a flavour of fresh green mint and limes it was delicious.

This year we did a day of handpicking. We picked four tonnes of Sauvignon Blanc from our older block which we had left on the vine to ripen more than normal. This was then whole bunch pressed at the winery and is now happily in barrel to produce our first ever barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc. This has a brilliant mix of gauva and ripe peachy flavours which make it really appealing. Anita and Kym are both very excited by the prospect of this wine. The handpicking was hard work but very much worth it for the amazing fruit flavour it shows. This wine will stay in barrel for a little while longer but look out for the release early next year.

The barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc is not our only new wine this year. We have produced a Sparkling Pinot Noir. With a bright sunset pink colour and a great cherry and strawberry flavour we are thrilled with our first ever Sparkling wine....Wangolina Station Jillaroo! The sparkling will be bottled in June and released shortly after stay tuned for more information.

The red grapes have also been harvested and have finished their primary fermentation. So far both batches look really good. The interrupted version and cooler year allowed us to accumulate great flavour in the grapes without the high sugar contents. Our Shiraz was picked first on the 9th of April and our vintage finished with perfect timing on the 22 April. Almost as soon as the Cabernet was finished being harvested the rain came and it was a much anticipated 45mm! The reds both look very fleshy and flavoursome. These wines are now in oak maturing awaiting release next year.

Overall it has been a very busy time here at Wangolina Station and we are now eagerly waiting to be able to show you the fruits of the season’s labour! We know how long some of you have been waiting for the new 2009 Sauvignon Blanc, the good news is that the wait is nearly over!
