The Archbishop, Vineyards & Chefs

To date we've had an interesting start to our Viticultural year. Our viticultralist Sheri moved with her husband to Tasmania and our vineyard contractors wound their business down a bit so now Dad and I have had to jump in and have a bit more of a go in the vineyard.

Sheri’s move to Tasmania has allowed for the return of a very familiar face here at Wangolina Station - Jeff Flint. Jeff was the person with whom we established the vineyard and it is great to have him back amongst the vines and wonderful to be working with him again.

We have also purchased our first large scale pieces of vineyard equipment, a vine spraying unit, tractor and slasher. This has meant that Dad has been appointed to head “tractor driver” for our vineyard and I am now spending more time in the vineyard looking at what stages the vines are at and ensuring that the right vineyard procedures are happening at the right time.
It is quite a learning curve for me but it is really great to be more grassroots and have more hands on involvement at the growing level.

We also had the opportunity to support a great charitable cause this year. We were approached by Paul Birchill, the Chef at the Wild Mulberry Cafe to sponsor the Anglicare Great Chefs Lunch held in Adelaide. The lunch is a showcase of the best produce from different South Australian regions. We sponsored the event with a donation of 2009 Section 67 Semillon that was matched to a Lobster Bisque prepared by Paul.

I was lucky enough to attend the lunch which also featured divine dishes created by some of South Australia’s leading chefs, including Simon Bryant, Saskia Beer, Ben Sommariva, Tim Bourke and Tony Hart. The funds raised at this event are used for the Archbishop's Appeal which is supporting Anglicare's Generate program. Generate is a pilot project to combat entrenched intergenerational unemployment in Adelaide's north. The lunch raised over $100,000 which is a great contribution towards an important project of which we were very proud to be associated with.

We are looking forward to a very busy Summer season here and I hope that I will see some of your faces during the busy season or at Sunday at the Station which Kristen has been working hard on to make a great day. I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and a wonderful new year.

Cheers

2011 Vintage - Done & Dusted!

This year was a trying season which has been widely reported through the media. Mount Benson faced similar issues to every other wine growing region of SA, with periodic rainfall and cooler conditions prevailing during the harvest season. Vintage was always expected to run a little later than previous years as budburst was later than normal, so we were well prepared for a season with a few more challenges.

Over the summer growing season we experienced cool conditions and received a large amount of rainfall in the first week of December. January and February were also much cooler than the norm with the La Nina weather pattern in place . We however were very fortunate that our coastal location meant that much of the heavier rainfall that other regions saw post Cyclone Yasi, skipped over the top of us and hit further inland. Because of these unusual weather conditions this vintage saw us spend more time looking at the vines, keeping a close watch over them to ensure they were in healthy condition.

Harvest commenced on March 18 with the first grapes from our new Sauvignon Blanc plantings being picked, with the remainder of the white grapes being picked by the 29th March. Although sugar levels were lower because of the cooler conditions, the flavours tend to be more on the herbaceous side but the intensity and aromatics of the wines are high. The Shiraz was harvested on April 6 then lastly the Cabernet Sauvignon on April 11. The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for the SSB wine has been blended and we are now in the process of getting it ready for bottling. The Shiraz and Cabernet have both been barrelled down and they will now undergo the secondary “Malo-lactic” fermentation.

We were really happy with the wines from the 2011 vintage and look forward to their release in the future.

Cheers

Roast Parsnip, Cauliflower & Bacon Soup with Section 67 Semillon

If you are a relative newcomer to Semillon then this is the perfect way to acquaint your taste buds with this diverse variety. Our Semillon wine style lends towards enjoying with food & this soup is the perfect accompaniment. Road tested & guaranteed by the Wangolina team!

INGREDIENTS
Olive oil
2 bay leaves
1 Cauliflower, into florettes
1 onion, roughly chopped
1 tsp horseradish cream
500g bacon bones
1/4 cup cream optional
Parsnips – roasted 1 tbs snipped chives
Water (enough to cover)
Black Pepper & Salt

Roast parsnips in the oven with olive oil until cooked & flavoursome - remove from heat. Chop onion and sauté with the bacon bones and olive oil until onion is soft. Add cauliflower & bay leaves and cover with water – bring to the boil. Once boiling cover and cook through until cauliflower is soft (at least 20 mins). Once cooked remove bay leaves and bacon bones (remove meat from bones and add back into the soup if you wish). Add roast parsnip to the soup and blend until smooth. (May need to do this in a couple of batches). You can add the horseradish, cream salt & pepper prior to serving when reheating and stir through. Serve with chives on the top & parmesan crisps on the side.

Bull Talk

Our farm has enjoyed the return of significant rainfall over the last 12 months with more substantial rain now due. The impact of rainfall cannot be overstated, the amount of feed available for livestock is the most notable observation but there are many other areas that flourish; a resultant rise in underground water levels and therefore the wetlands.

The water level in our swamp was such that a pair of Black Swans nested there late last year and their young hatched on New Year’s Eve. This swamp may go through the summer & autumn period without drying up and this would be the first time I can recall this happening.

The shorthorn cattle have enjoyed the provision of extra feed over the summer and autumn. Calving is now complete and the bulls have now returned to the cows where the cycle begins again. Zenag, our resident front paddock bull will soon have completed his sixth ‘ tour of duty’ and should return to greener pastures accompanied by some sons and a half brother.

Cheers

2011 Vintage

It's early days yet for harvest at Mt Benson but we are pleased to report that the Wangolina Station Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes have been picked and crushed, and as of yesterday our first harvest of Wangolina Pinot Gris made its way to the winery also. Quality looks very good for these three varieties and Anita is quietly excited about the potential of the fruit she has seen so far.

2011 has not been without its challenges with some unseasonal weather and unexpected rains that have impacted most wine regions throughout South Australia, but we are pleased to say that Mt Benson has been largely unaffected to date, but with the reds due to stay on the vines for another few weeks it will be fingers crossed for beautiful sunshine until then.

SE Field Days 2011

What a great event! Kristen & Anita from Wangolina Station attended the SE Field Days at Lucindale and the 2 days were actioned packed with many people through the Yakka Pavilion stopping to try our delicious wines and to have a chat. Our Jillaroo Sparkling certainly tempted the tastebuds of the local residents! Our WS stand ready and waiting for the gates to open!

There was great representation by many producers involved in the Limestone Coast Food Group and fabulous support and wines from other local wineries.

We were pleased to be a part of such a successful, historical event and congratulate the Lucindale Lions Club and volunteers for doing such a sterling job.

If you visited us at the Field Days thanks for stopping by and we hope to see you again whether it be at Wangolina Station or at next year's Field Days.
